and Conditions
The society campaigns on behalf of editors and their readers, listeners and viewers. We speak with the authority of editors in every medium.
The society is now the single powerful voice of editors in all sections of the media. Our annual conference has become not only the networking opportunity of the year for our industry but also the focal point for discussion of key topics in the media and politics.
In 2004 at Newcastle the Society of Editors’ annual lecture was delivered by Stewart Purvis, Professor of Television Journalism at City University and former Editor of ITN, on the threats to the future of regional TV news. Other keynote speakers came from a broad spectrum including the Editors of the News of the World and the BBC Today programme as well as the Lord Chancellor and the Leader of the Opposition.
Can you afford not to mix with the movers and shakers of our industry?
The society is always in the frontline of lobbying for the freedom of the press and the public’s right to know.
We have had considerable success in resisting threats to the media and in helping to establish a meaningful and ever-improving system of self-regulation for the Press. We have been at the forefront of the campaign to improve the Freedom of Information Bill, enacted in January 2005, and we work to improve the flow of information from the police and the courts to the public. We meet regularly with government ministers and other agencies and submit evidence to Whitehall and Westminster committees that scrutinise legislation.
The society is especially important given the growing proliferation and diversification of media outlets. We believe that while editors are in a competitive market, they can still come together to secure freedoms that cannot be taken for granted.
We always need more members from among editors, journalism trainers and media lawyers to strengthen our voice still further. The society’s work really does make a difference to the free flow of information, enabling us to publish or broadcast news that some would prefer to keep secret.
In addition, the society offers friendship and fellowship to editors, a monthly briefing on matters of importance to us all and a stimulating and thought-provoking annual conference.
I look forward to hearing from you and to welcoming you into our membership.
