1. ELIGIBILITY
Membership is open to those who work in or with the media in a senior editorial or policy making role. The categories of membership are listed below. Any queries regarding eligibility should be directed to the Executive Director
Editors or their deputies should apply for membership in one of the following categories. Acceptance of membership and allocation to a specific category with relevant level of subscription will be at the discretion of the Board.
Main Categories band membership fees
a) Publications
i) Editors and editorial directors of newspapers or magazines with full
responsibility for the
editorial department and legal responsibility for their publications:
Subscription: £230
ii) Deputy editors, assistant editors or section editors who deputise for
the editor who is a full
member:
Subscription: £60
b) Broadcasting
i) Senior executives of television or radio companies:
Subscription: £230
ii) Where there is a full member, all other editors in broadcasting with
responsibility for the
editorial function in the BBC, ITV companies or independent production companies:
Subscription: £120
Academics
i) Heads of university or college departments responsible for journalism
training:
Subscription: £230
ii) Other members of journalism departments (where there is a member paying
a full subscription):
Subscription: £60
c) Media Lawyers
i) Private practice lawyers working full-time on media issues:
Subscription: £230
ii) Lawyers in private practice where at least one other member is paying
the full subscription.
Subscription: £120
iii) In-house lawyers for publication or broadcaster (where there is at
least one editor paying the
full £230 subscription):
Subscription: £120
d) New Media
i) Editors and editorial directors of new media publications with full
responsibility for the editorial department and legal responsibility for
their publications:
Subscription: £230
ii) Deputy editors, assistant editors or section editors who deputise for
the editor who is a full member:
Subscription: £60
Emeritus Members
Former full members of the Society of Editors, the Guild of Editors of the
Association of British Editors or other suitably qualified candidates at
the discretion of the Board who have retired from full time control of the
editorial function or responsibility for journalism training:
Subscription: £25
Honorary Members
Former honorary members, honorary vice presidents or fellow members of the
Guild of Editors and other candidates elected to honorary membership by
the Board of the Society of Editors.
Fellows
The Board will recommend from time to time the election of Fellows of the
Society. Candidates will have made a substantial contribution to the activities
of the Society or its objectives or in the media industry generally.
2. YOUR COMMITMENT
By completing an online or postal application form, you apply to be a member of the Society of Editors, subject to the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the Society and authorise the Society to place your name on the Register of Members of the Society as such member.
The Society of Editors supports self-regulation of newspapers and magazines
and the work of the Press Complaints Commission and the Editor's Code Committee.
Members are expected to work with the code or regulatory systems in other
parts of the media.
As a member you agree to pay the annual membership subscription appropriate
to your membership and any other dues that may become liable to the Society,
and also to contribute to the assets of the Society, in the event of the
same being wound up while your are a member or within one year after you
cease to be a member.
(This contribution will be for the payment of the debts and liabilities
of the Society contracted before you ceased to be a member; and of the costs,
charges and expenses of winding up and for the adjustment of the rights
of the contributories amongst themselves. The amount that may be required
will not exceed the sum of £1 if at the relevant time you are a full
member, or, in any other case, the sum of 25p.)
