Parliamentary and Legal
The committee monitors legislation and the activities of government and other agencies to assess
the potential impact of policies on editors’ freedom to report on behalf of the public. It
meets regularly with government ministers, the police, senior judges and other legal officials representing
the views of editors and their legal advisors. It works with other media organisations and liaises
with the Editors’ Code Committee and the Press Complaints Commission.
Training
The committee monitors training activities and works to establish and maintain high standards in
the practice and ethics of journalism. It sets a strategy for the society and liaises with other
media organisations on training and standards. Society members work in training organisations and
colleges and sit on the boards of industry training organisations.
